Age-Defying Brain Boosts: Keeping Sharp Past 60!

Essential Tips for Maintaining Cognitive Agility After 60

Stepping into our next season of life, it's essential to prioritise not just our physical health, but also the well-being of our most powerful asset – our brain.

Here are a few key tips to help you maintain cognitive prowess and enjoy life to the fullest:.

1. Engage in Lifelong Learning:

The old adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to your brain. Whether it's learning a new language, exploring art, or taking up a new hobby, or do what I did and started learning how to read music and play clarinet for the first time at the age of 75,  exposing your brain to novel experiences stimulates the creation of new neural connections. This keeps your mind agile and adaptable, making it easier to tackle any new challenges.

2. Stay Physically Active:

It's no secret that physical activity benefits your body, but did you know it's also a powerful tool for your brain?  Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen that promote healthy brain function. Moreover, physical activity triggers the release of brain-boosting chemicals like endorphins and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which help improve memory, mood, and overall cognitive function. Activities like brisk walking, swimming, or yoga are excellent choices  to enhance brain health.

3. Prioritise a Nutrient-Rich Diet:

Our brain requires a steady supply of nutrients to function optimally, and diet plays a pivotal role in providing these essentials. Focus on consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins. Foods like fatty fish, berries, leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains can contribute to brain health by reducing inflammation and promoting the growth of new brain cells. Additionally, staying hydrated is vital, as even mild dehydration can impact cognitive function.

Why Supplement?

Think of your nutrient dense food as the bricks in a wall and supplements are the mortar that stops the wall from falling over.

The additional benefits of adding top quality supplements to fill the gaps that your nutrient rich diet can't do is paramount.

4. Socialise and Connect:

Maintaining an active social life isn't just enjoyable; it's also beneficial for your brain health. Engaging in social interactions stimulates your brain by challenging you to process information, understand social cues, and communicate effectively. Regular social engagement has been linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline. Join clubs, attend community events, stay in touch with friends and family, or volunteer – these activities can provide the mental stimulation needed to keep your brain sharp.

5. Prioritise Quality Sleep:

A good night's sleep is a vital component of brain health. During sleep, your brain processes the information gathered throughout the day, consolidating memories and allowing your mind to recharge. Poor sleep can lead to cognitive issues, including memory lapses and difficulty concentrating. Practice relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing to improve the quality of your sleep.

It is a myth that the older we get the less sleep we need.  ALL adults, need a good 7-8 hours of quality sleep to repair and recharge.

What's next?

It's not a given to  blame chronological age on loss of brain function.  At any age, we can maintain a sharp and agile mind by implementing these five key tips.     If you haven't reached these milestone decades yet, don't wait to  empower yourself to enjoy a fulfilling and intellectually vibrant life beyond 60. Start now and sail into your next season with a brain that is fully functional, inquisitive and creative.

Remember, your brain is like a muscle; the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes. So, embrace these practices and embark on a journey to keep your cognitive abilities at their best. These years are a time for growth, learning, and laughter, so seize the opportunity to live life to the fullest!

Understanding Nootropics: Boosting Cognitive Performance

They work by influencing neurotransmitters, chemicals in the brain that facilitate communication between nerve cells. By enhancing neurotransmitter activity, nootropics may improve memory, focus, creativity, and mental clarity. CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL STORY (TBA)

My personal journey:

My next birthday will clock up 77 years and I've never felt better.  I have embraced all those earlier points, and that's not the end of the story.    Getting to this age has not been without stress.  The loss of loved ones, being financially "healthy" when the cost of living is shooting through the roof are just two of life's big hurdles to overcome.  Among my non-negotiables for mental health and cognitive agility are meditiation, supplementation, and journaling at the end of every single day.    I never go a day without my "pink drink", my 3pm pick up, my drug free version for stress relief without side effect, and my CM2 pulse band that keeps my body ticking along as it should.
